at the farm

On Sunday we went to our first official farm tour at hidden villa. For the first time the kids had a chance to go all the way in the animals pens. We got to play with baby goats, spend some time petting and giving water to Cleo the cow and her calf Daisy and feed some pigs, sheep and chickens. We've spent a lot of time at this farm during the past six months and it was really neat to see how comfortable the kids have become around the animals.
Before heading to the animals pens we had the chance to smell and taste some wonderful plants growing in their garden, as well as learn some things we didn't know before. Our guide was great! Kids especially enjoyed trying beets, rhubarb and eating broccoli flowers (Madilyn's personal favorite) Jesse collected fallen apples to give to the pigs, his shirt pocket was the perfect spot to keep them.

After the tour we all splashed around in the creek to stay cool and on a log we found a banana slug and her baby. The kids very gently took turns "petting" the banana slugs with one finger. (I tried really hard not to watch that part) We are very excited to grow some of our new favorite veggies in our garden next year and I've had many requests since to fix more beets and rhubarb to eat! Oh the possibilities...hmmm, there is a rhubarb pie recipe I've had my eye on for a while, sounds like just the perfect time to try it out.
